Our Story

Mama B's Microgreens was born out of our deep love of food, nature, and a gentle way of living.

Our mission is to bring communities closer, improve local sustainability and spread love by providing one of the healthiest foods on our planet, all while educating and empowering people in the value of nutrition and making healthy choices. The village raises the child and we all share this world together.

Microgreens chose me.

A backyard farmer all my life. My life changed in January 2020, when I went to Thalian Hall to watch the documentary, “Fantastic Fungi.” I have always loved nature, food and horticulture, so I was fascinated by the number of mushrooms I had never tasted or even heard about, how connected the mycelium network is, and the fact that a 3 billion year-old mushroom fossil artifact was recently discovered!!

I began researching the health benefits of mushrooms and ordered Lairds Superfood mushroom powder that night. Once the powder was delivered, I mixed it in my daily smoothie and soon noticed an overall positive change in my energy.

My brother, Mac and I share an incredibly special bond. Two of many common interests have been our shared love of nature and gardening. As we talked about how mushrooms are an ancient superfood, he shared that microgreens are another superfood; something I should consider growing at home.

Naturally, I was nervous and anxious about learning something new and possibly failing. After a few of days contemplating, hesitating and procrastinating, I started indoor, hydroponic farming with a kit Mac sent me.

He had faith in my growing skills. The process was detailed, relatively simple, repetitive, yet quite laborious. Fast-forward to June 2021. I am still growing microgreens hydroponically in the kitchen but now on a commercial scale.

NUTRITION-CONSCIOUS AS A COLLEGIATE AND PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE

Having dedicated myself to becoming a Division I collegiate athlete I paid attention to the food I put in my mouth and the ingredients I cooked with. The organic label was not common when I was growing up so we ate as healthy as we found at the grocery store and rare farmers markets.

After college I moved to San Diego where my food exploration continued. I was introduced to smoothies, more varieties of fish (now being coastal), new fresh fruits (avocado and mango) as well as daily farmers markets.

The warmer climate encourages people to be outside more which paired well with a food- and health-conscious lifestyle. Adding beach workouts, jump rope, yoga and meditation to my daily exercises created more great days of feeling good.

As a special education teacher and lacrosse coach, I have been fortunate to live in San Diego, CA; Napa, CA; Oahu, HI; Denver, CO and New York City/Westchester, NY. These travels included a few cross-country trips which allowed me to learn about different cultures, climates and plants throughout our country.

BODY, MIND, SOUL

I am a believer that a healthy body is the foundation for a healthy mind and healthy soul. Each morning we start a new day with choices on how to fuel our bodies, minds and souls.

Understanding that our bodies are mostly water (~60%) I choose to carry a reusable water bottle with me wherever I go. I choose to drink water to limit the hunger pangs that can be easily misconstrued as hunger for food. I limit the waste of drinking from a plastic bottle. Adding superfoods to my diet ensures my body/engine is fueled properly each day (I still eat fast food and ice cream once in a while). I believe that if my body is fueled properly, my mind will be able to function properly. Daily life is not easy. It is full of challenging and tough decisions. But when my mind is right, my stress is less.

When my body and mind are properly fueled, the trickle-down to my soul is in full effect. Choosing happiness and trying to see the positive in every situation is a work in progress, as is being patient, having a proactive and open-mindset, while respecting that every individual is different.

The above daily needs/choices combined with daily fresh air and exercise in the form of a walk, yoga, pilates, meditation, bike ride, beach walk (and clean-up) or jump rope are a few ways that help every day be another best day!!

Eating and growing microgreens has confirmed to me that
little things make big differences!

I know Ned personally as well as his parents.  This is a highly responsible American Family, very devoted to health and fitness and to the needs of others. I have visited Ned at his growing lab for microgreens and it was no surprise to observe the commitment to a clean environment. I am a very satisfied customer!
